Museums

Archaeological Museum
The museum was inaugurated in 1962. There are exposed sculptures and statues of Thessalonica region from Archaic, Classic and Roman era. In a special wing of museum are accommodated treasures that found in Vergina during 1978 excavations and Derveni during 1984.

 

Byzantine Museum
The museum of Byzantine Culture was founded with a view to it constitutes centre of safeguarding, research and study of elements of Byzantine culture that is rescued in the Macedonian space and particularly in Thessalonica, the city that constituted the most important centre afterwards Istamboul in the European department of Byzantine empire. The museum includes collections of sculptures, frescos, mosaics, pictures, signs from the season of Byzantium.

 

Folklore Museum
It was built in 1906 from the Israelite Giako Modiano with drawings of his son of Eli Modiano (Ecole Centrale- Paris). It is known and as “old Governor”. From 1913 and it was afterwards used in succession as palace, as residence each of general manager of Macedonia, as a hieratical and as Military facility. From 1972, is accommodated within it a Folklore and Cultural Museum of Macedonia and Thrace. The building was manufactured in 1906 in coastal plot of initial extent of 5 acres. It is developed in four levels:  semi-basement, two floors and loft, total extent 1.200 square metres. Its architectural composition is characterized by exceptional disposal with intense effects art nouveau. Particularly appreciable is the two stories top with view to the sea.

 

Museum of Macedonian Cause
It is accommodated in old building that during the Ottoman domination was the Greek Consulate. In the museum exists exhibits and important documents during the period of the Macedonian liberation from the Ottoman Turks and the Bulgarian invaders..

 

Technical Museum
It was founded in 1978 and its objective is to maintain the technical and industrial heritage of Greece and make it available to the wider public. It allocates showrooms in the sectors of Telecommunications, Car, Railways, the Interval, the Photograph, the Broadcasting Corporation, the naval construcion, the Weaving, the History of Industry in Thessalonica etc.

 

Saint Sofia Cathedral (Agia Sofia)

Roman Marketplace
The centre of public life of city during the Roman era is encompassed by the current street Olympus and Philippous. There was the economic, commercial, but also recreational core of Thessalonica. Today, from the buildings have been restored and are operational to the public are the Crypt Gallery and the Conservatoire of (capacity of 350 individuals), which entertains artistic events.
